A (H1N1): Four UiTM students among latest cases

MALACCA: Four students from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) campus in Lendu, Alor Gajah are confirmed to have Influenza A (H1N1).

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said an assessment was being carried and the university might be closed temporarily if the need arose.

Liow said a medical team has been dispatched to the campus implement preventive measures to stop a further spread of the virus while carrying out a detailed assessment of the situation there.
Speaking to reporters after attending the opening of the Malacca state MCA Convention here on Sunday, he said that of the four cases, one was at the Malacca Hospital for treatment as his condition was deemed serious while three others were currently under treatment and quarantined at the campus.

“There are a number of light flu or common flu cases at the campus and we will be monitoring the affected students to determine if they are H1N1 cases or not.

“At the moment, they have been placed under self quarantine in the respective rooms,” he said, adding the quarantine measure involved two male and one female dorm at the campus.
He said that the ministry was also trying to determine how the virus spread to the students.
He added the ministry would announce the results of the detailed assessment of the situation at the campus on Tuesday.

Located about 30km from the city, UiTM Lendu was set up in 1994 and currently has some 5,000 students.

Last week, health authorities here confirmed that seven trainees at the Malaysian Maritime Academy in Alor Gajah tested positive for H1N1 with 50 others quarantined for observation.
