A(H1N1): UiTM in Permatang Pauh closed for a week

GEORGE TOWN: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Permatang Pauh has been closed for seven days after 10 students tested positive for the Influenza A (H1N1) virus.

The university was closed Wednesday morning, State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh told a press conference later in the day.

“The closure will be for seven days starting today as 200 students have been quarantined at their homes or hostels after developing flu symptoms.

“The 10 confirmed cases are being monitored. They students have been isolated and are being treated at the Seberang Jaya Hospital,” he said, adding that the university has a 5,000 student population.

“We have told them to practise self-monitoring and to report to the Seberang Jaya Hospital if they start developing flu symptoms.

“The hospital has already been put on alert,” he said.

Phee said that the St Anne’s Church in Bukit Mertajam had been briefed on the precautions to take as 100,000 pilgrims throng the church for the annual St Anne’s Novena and Feast which ends on July 26,

“We will have people coming from Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia so we have are on alert,” he said.
